CHICANO/CULTURAL ART
1992- 1996
Influence by Chicano murals during my youth, and living in Mexico city at age 15. I quickly adapted to the artistic language of Chicanismo. Growing up in East Los Angeles and being from a Chicano gang I learned to draw the basic homeboy icons: low rider cars, placas, roses, and much of the symbolism found in Latino Prison art. But it wasn't until after I had allowed the New York graffiti and the b-boy life style of the 1980's to change my direction that I fully understood the power of public art. I felt that most graffiti artists used their craft to promote themselves, I questioned " What do I want to say". After the 1992 Los Angeles Riots I had a lot to say, which opened a desire to appreciate the works of Tamayo, Orozco, Camarena, DeSyzslo and many others. These concepts and imagery are inter weaved in every aspect of my life, I am an Urban Chicano.
